Lodging Suggestions for Relay Weekend

Lodging Before and After the Grand Teton Relay

180 miles can be hard on any team, that’s why we are here to offer you with a few hotels suggestions for use before or after the big day.

Don’t delay! Make reservations as soon as possible.  Space is limited, especially in Ashton.

Before the Relay in Rexburg (30 miles from Ashton):

Super 8 (208) 356-8888 in Rexburg, ID

Rates: $71.96 for 1 adult

($5.00 for every additional adult)

* Above pricing will be granted upon calling for reservations.

Marriott Springhill Suites (208) 356-3003 in Rexburg, ID. No discount offered, but a good alternative with a great continental breakfast and the only Marriott in town if you are partial to them.

Before the Relay in Ashton

Ashton Inn RV and Tent Camping (208) 652-3699 in Ashton, ID. The hotel rooms are all booked up, but they have RV and tent camping sites available at very reasonable prices and very close to starting line.

The Log Cabin Motel (208) 652-3956 in Ashton, ID. Motel opens for the season in June. Right across the street from the starting line and extremely good rates.

There are other motels in Ashton, but as of today’s date they are completely booked. But they may take a waiting list. Other options that are currently full are The Rankin Motel and the Angler Inn.

After the Relay:

Hotel Terra (800) 631-6281 in Teton Village, WY.

The Inn at Jackson Hole (800) 842-7666 in Teton Village, WY.

Teton Mountain Lodge & Spa (800) 631-6271 in Teton Village, WY.

Teton Village or Aspen Condominiums (800) 442-8613 in Teton Village, WY.  • Call to book 15% off a condominium.  Condominiums require a 3-night minimum stay.

12 Week Running Training Program for Beginners

So you are registered for the GTRelay, but are new to running and are getting worried that you may have bitten off more than you can chew. Fear not. We are here to let you know that this relay is truly for everyone, and as long as you can move in a forward direction, you will be able to finish with flying colors.

We have put together a 12 week training program designed for beginning runners. A few caveats: we are not doctors and don’t pretend to be, so make sure you have a physician approval to start training if you are suffering from any health issues or concerns. Secondly, we really recommend you be able to jog for 20 minutes straight before starting this program.

The average length of leg on the relay is about 5 miles. So this training program will get you to a comfort level with distances about 5-7 miles. If you are running one of the longer legs, just bump the distances up a little bit. If you are more advanced and going for speed, simply increase your distance and tempo. We do recommend you keep the distance increase from week to week at no more than 10% to prevent injuries and to allow your body to slowly adapt to the mileage.

Since you will be running 3 legs during the relay, you may feel tempted to really pack on the miles in training. If you are an experienced runner and have the time, then go for it. If you just like to run for fun and want to finish and feel good after each leg, this program will be enough to get you to Teton Village in an upright position without too many horribly sore muscles.

Finally, if you are one of the lucky runners taking on Teton Pass or Grand Targhee, practice your hills! That applies to both the runners going up, and the ones coming down. Try to simulate the inclines on your treadmill and push yourself to run hard. And find some steep downhills to practice the descents. It will really help those quads come race day.

So here it is. Tweak to match your needs, and we hope this helps to point you in the right direction…by which we mean the Tetons, of course!

Sample 12 Week GTR Training Schedule for Beginners
**Consult your doctor before beginning any training program
**You should be able to comfortably jog 25 minutes without stopping before starting this program.

12 Run 25-35 min Crosstrain or walk 2 miles 2 miles Race Race
Definitions
Tempo: Faster than your race pace or your goal race pace by about 10%
Intervals: During the run vary your speed by running short sprint bursts throughout the run. Ie: run steady for3 minutes, sprint for 45 sec, run steady for 2 min, sprint 1 min etc.
Race Pace: Run at your race pace. Try to vary your terrain so that you are practicing running up and down hills as well as on the flat.
Recovery: These runs are the shortest of the week and serve mainly to get miles on your legs. Keep the pace gentle and easy, just listen to your body.
Crosstrain: This could be biking, yoga, zumba, weight circuits. Something that will strengthen your muscles and give your heart a workout while resting your running muscles
Shoot for at least 20 minutes to start and work your way up to 45 minutes to an hour by the end of week 12.
**If you will be running legs during the relay with a lot of incline, be sure to practice running on hills. Drive to a local hill and do your Saturday runs there, or
jump on a treadmill and use the incline to simulate the leg you are running.
Advanced Runners:
Increase the mileage or speed as you see appropriate to match your training and performance goals.
